Biography
Born and raised in the Netherlands where she attended the University of Utrecht, Doriane lived in several European countries. In addition to studying art abroad she completed numerous art courses and workshops in California. Originally an oil painter, she now concentrates on acrylics and watercolor.
A signature member of the Georgian Watercolor Society, the Louisiana Watercolor Society and the Society of Western Artists, she has won numerous prizes and had several one-person shows, amongst others at Stanford University and the Elizabeth Norton Gallery in Palo Alto, and has been represented by a number of galleries, especially in Carmel. Presently her work can be found at the Portola Art Gallery in Menlo Park, CA and the Classic Art Gallery in Carmel, CA. She has lectured on her work at the University of California at Berkeley.
Hallmarks of her work are bold colors, good composition and strong lights and darks, hinting at the symbolic equivalent: joy and sorrow, which appear in different guises in her work.
Her subject matter varies wildly: from landscapes - both foreign and local - , people in various settings, water with reflections, the roses in her garden, to more unusual themes, both in watercolor and acrylics.
Statement
Since in art, as in life, one does not escape one's background, an artist's experiences tend to get reflected in the artwork. Having grown up in the Netherlands and having lived and traveled extensively in many European countries, I still find Europe a source of inspiration for many of my paintings. Often I find an unusual angle, a different way of looking at the world.
Besides landscapes of different countries and compositions with people in various settings, water scenes are a favorite subject matter of mine. I am attracted by the mystery of water, sometimes revealing a lot, sometimes opaque, not giving anything away, always evoking a myriad of different moods."
