Biography

Art has been part of my life from a very young age. I remember vividly, staring for long periods of time at the Norman Rockwell covers of “Saturday Evening Post” magazine covers. They inspired me and at age 13 I started oil painting classes. I continued these for several years and was awarded the “Golden Key” award in an art show at Berkeley University while I was still in high school. I spent two years in a junior college taking all the art courses I could with an emphasis on commercial art. After college my art was put on the back-burner while I raised a family and pursued a career in school finance for the next 30 years. Shortly before I retired, I took a watercolor class at our local junior college and was hooked. I have always loved to look at watercolor paintings because of the clarity and lightness of the color. My passions are portraits, animals, and still life. I find I am happiest when I have a painting in the works. For that reason I head to my studio for 2 to 4 hours every morning when time allows. It has been an amazing journey of discovery for me. Being mostly self taught, I have enjoyed the challenges that watercolors present. The problem solving and planning use my left brain talents and the eye for color, light, and balance exercise my right brain. My work has won many awards over the last 10 years including three 1st Place, one 2nd Place, and one 3rd Place award for people and animal portraits in watercolor at the Highland Art Center juried shows, 1st Place and Best of Show at the Trinity County Fair, and 2nd Place at The Studio Experience juried show. Three of my paintings were accepted for the North Valley Art League’s National Juried Shows. I have had four art shows at the following venues; the Highland Art Center, the 5 Windows Gallery, the New Redding City Hall, and the Main Street Gallery, including several smaller shows at the Trinity Chamber of Commerce. I also enjoy showing my art in several other locations around Weaverville, Redding, Palo Alto, California, and the River Run Gallery in Leaburg, Oregon.
